Fix Bad Hands and Faces in AI Images Without Starting Over

Six fingers, a lopsided eye, a melted ear. Name the exact flaw, edit only that region and keep a side-by-side check instead of regenerating a good picture.

The useful result

Correct a single flawed area while keeping the rest of the image unchanged.

  • Correct a single flawed area while keeping the rest of the image unchanged.

The composition is right, the light is right, and one hand has six fingers. Regenerating the whole image throws away everything that worked, and a new roll may break something else. The better move is a targeted edit that changes one region and leaves the rest alone.

Tools describe this differently, with masks, brush selection or a chat instruction, but the logic is the same. OpenAI notes that prompt-based masks may not follow an exact shape precisely, and Google recommends iterating through conversation, so expect to check the result rather than trust it.

The examples below are illustrative exercises, not recorded results from any tool. Sources were checked on 24 October 2026; menus, limits and prices change, so confirm details on the linked pages.

Before you start

  • An AI image with one clear flaw
  • A tool that can edit part of an image or follow an edit instruction
  • The original file saved under a new name

Review evidence

Documentation-based review · 2026-10-24

Primary documentation and official guidance checked on 24 October 2026. Examples, checks and exercises are original illustrations, not recorded tool tests. Cover artwork is a conceptual illustration.

1

Name the flaw in plain words

Crop to the problem and describe it exactly: “right hand shows six fingers” or “left eye is smaller than the right”. Save the original untouched. A precise description gives the editor a target, while “make the hands better” invites changes everywhere.

Check your result

You can state the flaw in one sentence and your original file is saved separately.

2

Edit only that region and say what must not change

Select the area with a brush or mask if your tool has one. Ask for the fix and list what must stay the same. If the tool only takes chat instructions, say where the problem is and request the smallest possible change. Try two or three attempts and pick the best.

Try this prompt
Edit only the [right hand holding the cup]. Give it five natural fingers with correct proportions. Keep the face, clothing, background, lighting and colours exactly as they are. Do not change anything else.

Example / expected result

Illustrative example; not a recorded model result.

Instruction: “Edit only the right hand holding the cup. Five natural fingers. Keep everything else unchanged.” Expected result: a corrected hand with the background untouched.

Check your result

Everything outside the edited region still looks identical to the original.

3

Compare side by side, then simplify if it still fails

Put the original and the edit next to each other at 200 percent and look at the edit edges, skin tone and finger count. If two attempts fail, change the picture instead of fighting it: tuck the hand in a pocket, have it hold an object or crop it out of frame.

Check your result

The hand or face has the right number of features, with no visible seam or colour patch.

When it goes wrong

Masks can bleed into nearby areas, so check the edges as well as the repaired spot. Repeated edits on the same area can soften detail. Never overwrite your only copy. If the picture shows a real person, edit only images you have the right to use.

Make it your own

Generate an image of someone holding a mug, find one flaw, write the one-sentence description and make a single targeted edit. Save the before and after side by side and count the fingers.
