ChatGPT can remember details between chats, such as your job, your preferences or a project. Helpful, until it remembers something wrong, outdated or private, and weaves it into answers about something else. A skewed memory can also explain why replies feel oddly personal or oddly off.

OpenAI’s help centre explains where memory controls live and how deletion works, including a catch many people miss: deleting a memory does not delete the chat it came from. This lesson walks through a five-minute review you can repeat every few months.

The examples below are illustrative exercises, not recorded results from any tool. Sources were checked on 24 October 2026; menus, limits and prices change, so confirm details on the linked pages.

Before you start

  • A ChatGPT account with memory available
  • A few minutes, and your account open on a computer or phone

1

Open the memory controls and read every item

Go to Settings, then Personalization, then Memory. Menu names and options vary by plan and app version, so look for the list of saved memories or the memory summary. Read each item and mark it as correct, outdated, wrong or private.

Check your result

You have read the whole list and marked each item.

2

Delete what should go, including the source chat if needed

Delete wrong, outdated and sensitive items. OpenAI notes that deleting a memory does not remove the original chat, so if the detail is sensitive, also delete the chat or file it came from. If you want a clean slate there is an option to delete memory and turn it off, which leaves past chats in place.

Check your result

The memories you deleted no longer appear, and sensitive source chats are deleted as well.

3

Choose on purpose and use Temporary Chat for private topics

Decide whether memory is worth having. If yes, keep a short note of what you want remembered. For private topics, use Temporary Chat, which does not use or create memories and stays out of your history. Remember that turning memory off stops new memories but does not erase old chats.

Check your result

You have chosen whether memory stays on, and you know when you will use Temporary Chat.

When it goes wrong

If you turn memory back on later, new memories may be formed from chats that are still in your history. Temporary chats may still be retained briefly for safety, according to OpenAI. Interface labels change, so follow the current help page.

Make it your own

Do the review now and write down one memory you deleted and one you decided to keep. Set a reminder to repeat the check in three months.
