Which should you choose?
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal, IDEs and web, included in paid Claude plans. Cursor is an AI code editor with a free Hobby tier. They can both read a project and make changes, but they start from different places: an agent you direct, or an editor.
Choose Claude Code if…
- You want an agent that reads a whole codebase, makes multi-file changes and runs commands under your approval.
- You already pay for a Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), which includes it.
Choose Cursor if…
- You want an editor where agent, chat and review sit in one window.
- You want to try it free first: the Hobby plan has no credit card requirement but limited agent requests.
Check before you pay: Claude Code has no standing free plan stated and large tasks can hit subscription limits. Cursor's premium models and agent limits vary by plan, and third-party models are billed separately.
