The useful result
Request informative milestone notes and distinguish absent updates from hidden interface output.
- Request informative milestone notes and distinguish absent updates from hidden interface output.
A longer task is easier to follow when updates explain what changed and what remains uncertain. Anthropic documents fewer default updates in Fable 5.1 and a separate API display requirement for receiving progress content. Use a narrow milestone instruction and verify that your interface can actually show the updates before blaming the prompt.
Fable 5.1 requires eligible paid access; plan inclusion and usage credits differ. Check the linked account guide. You can practise the technique on the supplied fictional inputs with an available compatible assistant first. This lesson is documentation-based; examples are expected results, not a claim that we ran the named model.
Before you start
- A harmless task with three real phases, such as reading a brief, drafting and checking.
- API builders: access to the current display/streaming documentation and a safe test client.
Review evidence
Documentation-based review · 2026-10-18
Provider documentation checked on 18 October 2026. Examples and checks are original illustrative exercises, not recorded platform tests. Cover artwork is conceptual and does not imply provider sponsorship.
Choose milestones with observable meaning
Define three points: after reviewing the source, after producing a first draft and after checking it. Ask for one or two sentences at each point, focused on evidence and next steps. Do not demand constant narration of internal reasoning.
Example / expected result
Illustrative example; not a recorded model result.
Source reviewed → missing detail found. Draft ready → one claim needs checking. Review complete → change and remaining uncertainty.
Check your result
Each requested update corresponds to a real task phase, not an invented elapsed-time promise.
Check the display path
For the API, read the linked progress-update guidance and configure the supported thinking display mode if your application needs it. Render the permitted status text; do not assume ordinary assistant-text streaming includes every update. In a hosted chat, use only controls actually available there.
For this three-phase drafting task, give a brief user-facing update after source review, after the first draft, and after verification. Say what you learned, what remains uncertain and what comes next. Do not claim a phase happened until it did. Do not expose private reasoning.Example / expected result
Illustrative example; not a recorded model result.
Illustrative update: “The brief supplies the price but not the license. I’m keeping licensing as an open question while drafting the summary.”
Check your result
Your test distinguishes content not emitted from content emitted but hidden.
Judge the final handoff separately
The final result must stand on its own even if a reader never saw the progress notes. Check the deliverable, changes, failed checks and next action. A polished status note is not evidence that a file was created or a test passed.
Check your result
The final response accurately records completed work and unresolved checks without relying on earlier updates.
When it goes wrong
Prompting alone cannot make a client display suppressed content. Beta API controls may change; use current documentation. Excessive updates can obscure the work, and requests for progress are not permission for additional actions.
Make it your own
Run the same permitted short task with and without a milestone instruction. Record what your interface visibly showed; do not invent invisible updates or compare unsupported timing claims.
