Check a Price, Margin or Break-Even Calculation AI Gave You

Never trust an AI’s business arithmetic blind. Write the formula yourself, make the AI show every step, and run three quick sanity tests before you set a price.

The useful result

Verify a break-even and margin result with your own calculation before using it for a price.

  • Verify a break-even and margin result with your own calculation before using it for a price.

You ask an assistant for a break-even point and get a confident number. If it mixes up margin and markup, forgets a fixed cost or rounds early, you may price a product at a loss without noticing. Language models are good at explaining formulas and unreliable at long arithmetic, so the safe habit is to check, not to hope.

This lesson gives you the three formulas worth knowing, a prompt that forces visible steps, and three sanity tests that take two minutes and catch most errors.

The examples below are illustrative exercises, not recorded results from any tool. Sources were checked on 24 October 2026; menus, limits and prices change, so confirm details on the linked pages.

Before you start

  • A price, a unit cost and a monthly fixed cost (use the fictional numbers if you prefer)
  • A calculator or spreadsheet
  • The AI’s answer you want to check

1

Write the formulas in your own words first

Contribution per unit is price minus variable cost. Break-even units are fixed costs divided by contribution per unit. Margin is profit divided by price, while markup is profit divided by cost, and mixing them up is the most common mistake. Write these three lines down before you ask anything.

Check your result

You can state margin and markup separately, and you have the three formulas in front of you.

2

Make the AI show every step with the numbers

Give the AI your figures and ask for a table of steps, one calculation per row, with units. Ask it to state each formula before using it and to keep full precision until the final line. Then recompute the table in your own spreadsheet.

Try this prompt
Calculate break-even and margin. Price: [price]. Variable cost per unit: [cost]. Fixed costs per month: [fixed]. Show a table with one row per step: the formula, the numbers substituted, and the result. Do not round until the final answer. Then state margin and markup separately and say which is which.

Example / expected result

Illustrative example; not a recorded model result.

Price 25, variable cost 10, fixed costs 1,500 a month. Contribution 15. Break-even 1,500 ÷ 15 = 100 units. Margin 15 ÷ 25 = 60%. Markup 15 ÷ 10 = 150%.

Check your result

Every row of the AI’s table matches your spreadsheet to the cent.

3

Run three sanity tests

First, set price equal to cost and check that margin becomes zero. Second, at break-even units, multiply units by contribution and confirm it equals fixed costs. Third, raise the price a little and check that break-even units fall. Any test that fails means a mistake somewhere.

Check your result

All three tests pass with your own numbers.

When it goes wrong

Variable costs often hide shipping, fees and returns, so list them before trusting the result. Break-even ignores your own time. Taxes and currency conversions need a professional’s check. If the AI cannot show its steps, do not use its number.

Make it your own

Take a product you could sell. Write its price, variable cost and fixed cost, calculate break-even by hand, then ask an AI and compare. Note which step, if any, differed.
